People, Machines, and Artificial Intelligence
People bring purpose, domain knowledge, and judgment, and retain responsibility for decisions and consequences. Machines sense or act in the physical world. Artificial intelligence can interpret context, connecting human intent with machine state or action.
These roles are distinct. Our work examines how they can be joined into systems that preserve human direction while making relevant machine capabilities available to the people responsible for the work.
Consequential Physical Technologies
Scientific and engineering teams work across laboratories, workshops, prototyping facilities, operating rooms, fabrication spaces, and field environments. We are interested in the interactions that shape their work across these settings.
Our interests include therapeutic neurotechnology, optics and remote sensing, scientific instrumentation, robotics and fabrication, critical infrastructure, and advanced research systems.
Research Alongside Teams
Our approach is to work alongside teams in real research and development environments. We identify a specific human–machine interaction worth studying or improving, design and test possible systems, and turn what generalizes into research, tooling, infrastructure, or products.
Teams set their own objectives and define success. We focus on the interaction: observing it carefully, forming testable ideas, building systems, and learning from their use in context.
This applied method connects particular work to broader questions. A useful result may be a better understanding of an interaction, a tool suited to one setting, shared infrastructure, or a product that can serve related teams.
